Tell Someone

Tell SomeoneHave you been the victim of harassment or discrimination because of your race, religion, colour, gender, disability, sexuality or ethnicity?

Harassment or discrimination based on sex, race, religion, disability, or sexual orientation is unacceptable. It may be a hate crime.

What is a hate crime?

A hate crime is any incident that is a criminal offence, which the victim or any other person believes has been caused by prejudice or hate of the group that the victim is thought to belong to.

It can include harassment, threats, damage or assault.

It can be a single incident, or it can be ongoing harassment over a period of time.

Hate crime is not always reported, sometimes because people think nothing can be done. But if crimes are not reported, no-one knows they are happening. We want to know, so we can do something about them.

Tackling hate crime is a top priority for Victim Support

How can I report it?

There are several ways in which you can report any hate crime. You do not have to go directly to the police if you do not want to. You can report the crime at a ‘third party reporting centre’.

A reporting centre has staff who are specially trained to support victims of hate crime, whether it is because of their race, religion, or disability, and crime against lesbians, gay men, bisexual and transgendered people.

Victim Support is a third party reporting centre

If you come to Victim Support there will be someone that you can talk to in confidence. If we do not have someone who speaks your language we will try to provide an interpreter.

Incidents can be reported anonymously to the police. Victim Support can liaise with other organisations on your behalf, such as the housing department.

We can also put you in touch with other practical sources of help including getting repairs done following a break-in, improving security and removing graffiti.

All Victim Support offices are "reporting centres" that will
offer you help, support, and guidance. Please call in.
